The Arts at CIIS Presents Event on Pluralism in PhotographyPosted on Feb 25 2013

By Zack Rogow

On the evening of Thursday, February 28, 2013, The Arts at CIIS will feature leading figures in the movement for pluralism in contemporary photography. This free public event serves as a doorway into the current exhibition, En Foco/In Focus, which includes highlights from the collection of En Foco, a leading collection of photographers of color in North America. These photographs have never before been exhibited on the West Coast as a group.

"We're very excited to have these wonderful photographs, curators, and artists all at CIIS for this evening," says Deirdre Visser, director of The Arts at CIIS. ""The first half of the event is an open house," she adds. "En Foco/In Focus is unique in our exhibition history because it occupies three floors of the building, so we wanted to give the audience a chance to move through and experience the whole show."

Following the self-guided tour, at 7:30 the event will shift to a conversation with Exhibition Curator Elizabeth Ferrer; En Foco Director Miriam Romais; and two of the Bay Area-based artists whose work is represented in the exhibition, Germán Herrera and Luis Delgado Qualtrough. After brief presentations about En Foco, an informal conversation will follow, touching on some of the dynamic trends and challenges in contemporary photography.

Three chefs representing three different culinary traditions are contributing food for the event. Each is affiliated with La Cocina, an incubator kitchen for emerging chefs located in the San Francisco's Mission district. Event participants can enjoy the work of Azalina's Malaysian, Chiefo's Kitchen (West African cuisine), and Alicia Villanueva's Tamales Mayas.

En Foco/In Focus takes place at California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), 1453 Mission Street (between 10th and 11th Streets), San Francisco, California, on Thursday, February 28, 2013, starting at 6:30 pm.
