EXA Partners with Contra Costa County Health ServicesPosted on Jun 18 2013

By Kasey Varga

The CIIS Expressive Arts Therapy program is creating a partnership with Contra Costa County Health Services (CCHS) to develop, implement and evaluate Healing Through The Arts (HTTA) programs. CCHS cares for and improves the health of all people in Contra Costa County with special attention to those who are most vulnerable to health problems. HTTA's mission is to improve the experience of patients, families, and staff through the creation of a healing environment that uses all forms of artistic expression available in the community.

So far, we have recruited three EXA alumni for part time paid internships and core faculty Phil Weglarz, MFT, REAT will offer weekly supervision and act as the faculty liaison between CIIS and CCHS. In the fall, we hope one or two EXA practicum students will join the team.

We've already begun to provide in-services for medical staff to support with programming, and there are plans to offer staff retreats and create more opportunities for staff to practice arts-based self-care. Among the initiatives our interns plan to contribute are: hands on arts activities in waiting areas, music and drama therapy programs at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, expressive arts therapy for groups, individuals, families, and staff, and an annual staff festival.
