Donors and Friends
"Because of the economic downturn, students need help more than ever. Without support in the form of scholarships, some students can't afford to attend CIIS."
—Dorotea Reyna, Director of Development
Scholarship support is key to our aim of enrolling a diverse group of talented and promising students.
California Institute of Integral Studies is committed to expanding scholarship offers to meet increased student need especially in this difficult economic environment.
Awards are based on financial need, diversity, and, in some cases, faculty recommendation.
In addition to creating the Alumni Scholarships, the Institute has allocated a total of $1.1 million in scholarships for the upcoming 2009–2010 academic year, a 22 percent increase in scholarship spending from last year.
Alumni Generosity
CIIS has launched a campaign to secure contributions for the Alumni Scholarships from 1,000 individuals. To date, more than 300 alumni have contributed. The Alumni Scholarship, one of four scholarships open to both undergraduate and graduate students, is not specific to an academic program.
"Being awarded the Alumni Scholarship suggests that the philosophy I've always believed is true: People who are ahead on any given success path tend to turn around and extend a helping hand to those currently trudging. For that, I am grateful."
—Kendra Harris, doctoral student, Transformative Studies
Kim Cuddy , also an Alumni Scholarship recipient, is a doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology program. She spent years counseling and case managing homeless, at-risk, and LGBTQ street youth in the Bay Area, New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
Kim, who has also worked as a vegetarian chef and activist, promoting organic farming, sustainable food systems, and food justice, believes that the scholarship affirms CIIS's values of generosity and support for successive generations.
