Highground Hackers: Hackathon for Mental Health

CIIS is partnering with Highground Hackers to provide mentorship and educational resources for the next Highground Hackathon, which will be focused on mental health issues.

ABOUT HIGHGROUND HACKERS

Highground Hackers is a group of civic minded developers, technology executives, entrepreneurs, and investors working to connect engineering talent with non-technical experts in different fields of public concern.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The event is sponsored by Accenture and will be held at the Rackspace co-working space Geekdom. Food and drinks will be provided. You'll have power, wi-fi, and a great place to meet other hackers and build cool stuff.

Here is a list of the types of problems within the field of Mental Health where software engineering and social hacks can really help.

MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT -- Introductory Video
Professor Mark Fromm, Integral Counseling Psychology
California Institute of Integral Studies
Children and adults who are in crisis need to be identified in order to be supported with help and services. Those who are un-identified risk falling through the cracks.

TRAUMA RESPONSE -- Introductory Video
Professor Jennifer Wells, Transformative Studies
California Institute of Integral Studies
People who have experienced trauma tend to be hyper-alert of a repeat performance and create stories around an issue or person, hurting any chance of healing or release, and causing violent outbursts.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION IN YOUTH -- Introductory Video
Professor Phil Weglarz, Expressive Arts Therapy
California Institute of Integral Studies
In 2010, 1 in 6 youths reported being victims of violence online; 7% of teachers that year reported being physically attacked by students; that same year, 1 in 5 12 to 18 year olds reported the presence of gangs in their schools.  There are number of prevention stragies recommended that we will explore to prevent violence.

GUN VIOLENCE -- Introductory Video
Richard Buggs
Licensed Clinical Psychologist and CIIS Faculty
In some people anxiety can provoke an aggressive and violent response. Aggression and violence may not be "common" in those with anxiety, but they're very real and can be extremely problematic for those that suffer from them.

ISOLATION -- Introductory Video
Professor Craig Chalquist, East-West Psychology
California Institute of Integral Studies
When a person is emotionally isolated, they keep their feelings completely to themselves, are unable to receive emotional support from others, “shut down” or feel numb, and cannot or do not communicate with others. Breaking a cycle of isolation is a difficult but necessary part of recovery from emotional distress.

INNER CRITIC/SUPER EGO -- Introductory Video
Rebecca Elliott
Super Egos are powered by aggression and can cause depression, low self-esteem, self-justified blaming that can lead to violence, isolation issues, narcissism and racism.

PRESENTIVE TECHNOLOGY -- Introductory Video
Annabel Mangold
UX Designer and Strategist

THE NATURE OF DATA -- Introductory Video
Professor Daniel Deslauriers, Transformative Studies
California Institute of Integral Studies

INSPIRATIONAL TALKS

There will also be inspirational talks at the event for a quick break from the keyboard.

Merlin’s New iPhone: New Inventions Meet Old Tales
Professor Craig Chalquist, East-West Psychology
California Institute of Integral Studies
A new device doesn’t drop into the world entirely premade, but packed with ancient images, stories, and bits of lore. Attend this presentation to hear some parallels between the technologies of today and the ancient myths that foreshadowed them. Consciousness of the fantasies that cling to our machines could make the difference between owning and being owned by them, loss of human potential and its amplification into possibilities for a bright new future. Craig Chalquist, PhD is department chair of East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. A lecturer and graduate instructor, he has also written several books on the intersections between mind, myth, culture, and world.

Human Flourishing
Professor Meg Jordan, PhD, RN, CWP
Department Chair, Integrative Health Studies
California Institute of Integral Studies
An inescapable paradox of the 21st century is that the faster we go, the more we rely on presence as the quality that gets us by. Yet how do you cultivate crazy-slow wisdom in an accelerated era? Can the pressure for higher performance and productivity co-exist with the essential human desires for happiness, contentment and social belonging? This presentation on Human Flourishing will explore the relationship between mental activity and physiological responses, and review recent neuroscientific findings that prove the power of positivity.

High Functioning Teams
Rebecca Elliott, MA
Executive Coach and Consultant
Elliott Coaching
High functioning work teams sometimes just happen, and great things are accomplished. Personalities seem to click. Other times it’s hard to get where another is coming from, and the disconnects can impede progress. What gives? We’ve heard of introverts and extraverts, but psychoanalyst Carl Jung develops this with 4 primary versions of introverts and extraverts. With an easy way to visually remember basic personality distinctions, this presentation reveals how the types see each other, leading to “aha” understandings, cultivating stronger communications and interpersonal effectiveness.
