Call of the Soul in Confucius with Meili Pinto: Lecture

Join the CIIS Alumni Association for our first events of the new year.

The free lecture will take place on Friday, January 24, 2014, from 7-9 pm.

Learn about the related RELATED WORKSHOP, which will take place on Saturday, January 25, from 9 am-Noon.

This event is sponsored by the CIIS Alumni University Lecture Series

Confucius himself leaves an autobiographical sketch (Analects 2:04) in which he lists his own development--with implied satisfaction—in six stages of life.

Friday's lecture will look at Confucius' 38-idiogram autobiography. His six stages echo Western psychologists such as Erik Erikson and will serve as a springboard for discussion on stages of self-actualization with the quest of soul as the basic context for human life.

Saturday's workshop will discuss Junzidao—the Confucian existential practice. There are strong parallels between Confucius' understanding of the human psyche and Western existential psychology. Participants will learn a teaching method he devised to help direct our attention to our existential goal.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Meili Pinto, PhD (TLR, '98), advised at her graduation that it would take 10 years to mature her thesis on Confucius, indeed Confucius has directed her life since. The rich integral spirituality and coursework in psychology, language, philosophy and religion at CIIS devolved into a quest for Confucius' integral relevance beyond the Asian world. She has presented at the American Psychological Annual Conference for the past four years. She has been working on a book series under the title "Psychological View of Confucius," among which are "The Heart-Mind Fusion (2010)," "Confucius, Septuagenarian" (2011), and "The Existential Confucius" (2012).
