Apply to the Women’s Spirituality PhD and MA Programs

This program offers both a MA and a PhD.

Master of Arts, Philosophy and Religion

Led by pioneers in Women's Spirituality, who are internationally known for their scholarship, this interdisciplinary program promotes both personal growth and social transformation.

Candidates may enroll in a residential format or one combining online courses, weekend courses and a summer intensive.

The course of study can focus on one or two of our six Areas of Emphasis:

  • Women in World Religions/Faith and Feminism
  • Feminist and Ecofeminist Philosophy
  • Body Wisdom/Women and Healing
  • Women's Mysteries and Sacred Arts
  • Archaeomythology and EcoSocial Anthropology
  • Peace and Partnership Studies/Justice, Community, Sustainability

Students also take a course in two other CIIS concentrations, and may pursue independent studies with faculty members. The culminating project may be a thesis, scholarly article, or portfolio project.

Admission Requirements

Application for Admission.

Non-refundable $65 Application Fee.

Degree Requirement: An undergraduate degree (BA, BS, or the equivalent) from an accredited college or university.

Transcripts: Official transcripts from all accredited academic institutions attended within the United States. Transcripts must arrive in their official, sealed envelopes.

Autobiographical Statement: A four-to-six page (typed, double-spaced) introspective autobiographical statement discussing your values, emotional and spiritual insights, aspirations, and life experiences that have led to your decision to apply.

Goal Statement. A one-page (typed, double-spaced) statement of your educational and professional objectives.

Academic Writing Sample: A writing sample of eight-to-ten pages (typed, double-spaced) that demonstrates your capacity to think critically and reflectively and demonstrates graduate level writing abilities. A sample that uses outside sources must include proper citations. You may submit copies of previous work, such as a recent academic paper, article, or report that reflects scholarly abilities.

Doctor of Philosophy and Religion

Doctoral dissertations, grounded in the literature of Women's Spirituality and at least one other academic field, result in an original contribution to cross-disciplinary scholarship. Our graduates teach and work in social service and health care agencies.

Two Letters of Recommendation: Recommenders should use standard business format and include full contact information-name, email, phone number, and mailing address.
