Writer and Artist Jaime Cortez
Please join us for a reading and neo-benshi performance with interdisciplinary artist, writer—and CIIS Spring 2014 Artist in Residence—Jaime Cortez. A contemporary iteration of live film narration that emerged during the silent film era, neo-benshi is an experimental form marked by subversive humor and social critique, that inserts new narratives where audiences expect the familiar.
Cortez, who will be teaching an MFA course on the graphic novel titled, In the Line of Fire: Confronting Social Justice Issues Through the Graphic Novel this spring, is a writer, visual artist, and longtime student of comic books and graphic novels. His art has been exhibited at the Berkeley Art Museum, Oakland Museum of California, Intersection for the Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Galería de la Raza. His short stories have been published in more than a dozen anthologies.
