Working With Kinky Clients: What Therapists Need To Know with Kirsten Beuthin, MFT

About the Presentation

This talk is focused on helping clinicians deliver culturally competent care to clients who identify with the culture of bondage and discipline, domination and submission, and sadism and masochism (jointly referred to as BDSM). Participants will learn the basics of BDSM/kink culture, acquire tools to assess and evaluate for problematic sexuality issues, and develop an understanding of therapeutic approaches to ethically treat sexual outsiders. With short exercises, we’ll begin to explore these important questions.

  1. Learn about BDSM/kink subculture, community codes, and practices.
  2. Develop tools to differentiate between non-pathological expression of BDSM and problematic sexuality or abuse.
  3. Gain a basic understanding of therapeutic and ethical issues in working with sexual outsiders.

Integral Counseling Psychology Master's Program

The Integral Counseling Psychology (ICP) program is one of five distinct master's in counseling psychology programs at CIIS. ICP was the first East-West, transpersonal psychology graduate program in the world. Transpersonal psychology is a framework in which Western schools of psychology are synthesized with the world's spiritual traditions. We view psychological healing and growth within the larger context of spiritual unfolding.
