Accompaniment: Psychosocial, Trans-Species and Earth-Based with Mary Watkins, PhD

About the Presentation

In this talk, liberation psychologist Mary Watkins will advocate for the re-orientation of the lifework of psychologists through engagement in “accompaniment.” She will begin by describing the emergence of the idea of accompaniment in liberation theology in Latin America, and then will chart its migration into liberatory forms of psychology as “psychosocial accompaniment.” Watkins will describe phenomenologically what is entailed in the stance of accompaniment and what is at stake in its ethics, highlighting differences from mainstream stances in psychology, and drawing implications for both trans-species and earth-based accompaniment.

Integral Counseling Psychology Master's Program

The Integral Counseling Psychology (ICP) program is one of five distinct master's in counseling psychology programs at CIIS. ICP was the first East-West, transpersonal psychology graduate program in the world. Transpersonal psychology is a framework in which Western schools of psychology are synthesized with the world's spiritual traditions. We view psychological healing and growth within the larger context of spiritual unfolding.
