He's practiced in foster homes, after school programs, residential youth services, child welfare agencies, hospitals, adult day treatment, and private studios. He teaches expressive arts therapy at the graduate level and offers introductory workshops in the use of play and improvisation for undergraduates and other adults. Phil has a private practice in San Francisco and Oakland, offering individual, couples, family and group therapy.

Active Imagination, created by Phil, is an expressive arts program for children and their families, drawing on each child's natural creative instincts and desire for play and connection. Some programs are therapeutic in nature and geared to a specific audience, others pure fun and are inclusive of a larger community. Activities include hands-on designing & building, live-action role play, storytelling, dance, music, interactive games, and discussions. 2011 programs worked primarily with boys, age 6 - 9, with autistic spectrum disorders, including a two-week day camp for boys inclusive of those with or without special needs. Check out the incredible, live-action creations at link above!
