Controller

California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco is a pioneer in integrative higher education, providing interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and applied studies in psychology, philosophy, religion, cultural anthropology, transformative studies and leadership, integrative health, and the arts. The school offers masters and doctoral degrees, as well as a Bachelor of Arts completion degree. We are conveniently located in the SOMA district of San Francisco, which is a quick walk from BART, Muni and other public transportation.

SUMMARY

Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Administration, the Controller is responsible for the overall control of the general ledger, budget reporting and cash management. This position works with department Directors, Program Chairs, and the Institute's external auditors and is a strong contributor to and leads the day to day accounting operation, develops policies and works to improve procedures and internal control. While the position reports to the VP of Finance & Admin, the incumbent will work closely with other functional areas and academic programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads the quarterly and year-end accounting closes.
  • Works closely with the VP in the process of budget development and revision
  • Monitors the budget and prepares variance reports
  • Participates in all budget discussions at the IPBC and Board of Trustees meetings
  • Assists the VP to develop and monitor enrollment projections
  • Monitors all tuition and non-tuition revenue streams and prepares monthly status reports
  • Oversees reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts
  • Coordinates the financial audit and liaises with the external auditors
  • Oversees all compliance reporting requirements with banks, lenders, third parties. Prepares IRS Form 990 Information Return
  • Analyzes the income and expenses of auxiliary operations, clinics and public programs
  • Supervises accounting staff of 3
  • Works closely with the Business Office and backs up student accounts or payroll staff when needed
  • Advises the Vice President on the financial condition of institutional funds and accounts and on appropriate fiscal procedures
  • Consults to Clinics, Auxiliaries and Public Programs on good cash handling and internal control practices
  • Compiles data and prepares reports, statements, studies and analyses as required and in a timely manner
  • Administers an accounting system for all funds which fulfills internal and external information and reporting requirements and complies with GAAP, GASB, and NACUBO guidelines
  • Maintains an up to date knowledge of Jenzabar accounting module
  • Performs other duties as needed


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in Business, Accounting or Finance; Masters degree preferred
  • Accounting designation (CPA or CMA)
  • 5+ years accounting experience in higher education
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Supervisory experience
  • Detail oriented and results driven
  • Excellent understanding of enterprise database systems
  • Knowledge of Jenzabar highly desirable
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
